K-Days

Sunday, we managed to make it to the last day of K-Days (previously Klondike Days) which is a 10 day fair.  It had most of the fair things we are use to...rides, food, concerts.  Although we didn't check any of it out, there were more indoor things then I'm use too seeing at a fair...their exhibit hall was full of stuff like a casino, shopping, more food, a kid section, etc.  It was another questionable day (cool and looked like it could rain) but the rain held off so we can't complain.  Ethan rode a few rides and loved all of them (except for the one he rode alone but that was more because he had to ride with another boy which he had no interest in).  We also enjoyed some traditional fair food which is always good.

Penguin Picnic at Wizard Lake

The sales office here in Edmonton has a picnic each year at the manager's family cabin at Wizard Lake (they call it the Penguin Picnic but the story behind it isn't very exciting).  Getting Ethan to take an early nap failed and when we were loading the car it started to rain so we weren't sure how the day would go.  As we made the 45 min drive to the lake, the sky cleared up and it ended up being a beautiful day.  Ethan didn't think he wanted to go on the boat when they went out tubing but when they came back he decided he wanted to go the next time, unfortunately time ran out and they didn't make it back out.  He was all over going on the trampoline though.  Ryan (Wade's coworker Andy's son) was volunteered to keep an eye on the kids but I think he had a good time also.

Strawberry Picking

My family has always loved strawberries so when I saw that there were U Pick Strawberry Patches here, I knew it was something Ethan and I should check out.  Ethan had a blast picking and eating the strawberries and he did a great job.

Tour of the Black Hills

I think everyone is calling the 2nd Hansen Hiatus another success.  Between the 6 families, we managed to have a long list of things that we did while there.  I had no idea there was going to be so much to do....something for everyone.  The only bad thing was Noah going in for an emergency appendectomy the last day we were there.  He had great care though and was back to the cabin the same day.  I think it was a long drive home for him but he is doing fine now.  The vacation was already memorable but that just topped it off.

All the photos are a little bit overwhelming so I'm only posting a couple here...

I saw this idea on pinterest and thought it would be fun to do each year and include in Ethan's yearly photo book.  He did pretty good although there were a couple questions that I had to give him some of his options and then he picked is favorite.  I did have to leave part of the question off on 19 because I couldn't get through to him that I was asking his favorite dinner and not what presents he wanted.

Canada Day

Wade was lucky enough to have another 3 day weekend last week since Monday was Canada Day.  As most would probably guess, Canada Day is celebrating the day that Canada became a country.  Canadians seem to celebrate pretty much the same way the Independence Day is celebrated in the US...parades, fireworks, barbeques, etc.  I've also seen lots of merchandise and sales in the stores leading up to Canada Day just like we would see for 4th.

As for us, we had a couple people over for a barbeque on Sunday but we didn't really do much on Monday.  Since the daylight is so long here, the fireworks weren't being set off until 11pm which is late for Ethan and even for Wade on a "school night" (plus Ethan doesn't really like loud noises so I'm not sure he would have even enjoyed them).

Grandma and Grandpa Visit for Ethan's Birthday

We had a lot of fun showing Grandma and Grandpa around (without snow and cold weather).  Grandma came up the day before Ethan's birthday and then Grandpa came up after market on Saturday.  I tried to pick some of Ethan's favorite things especially on his birthday.  We started with donunts at Tim Horton's and then a trip to the zoo (including a train ride).

On Saturday, we took a ride on a streetcar that goes over the river (it runs during the summer on the upper level of the big bridge).  Next we stopped in at the Muttart again and saw the new feature pyramid.  Our last stop was to have lunch in a train car.

We had one nice day while grandpa was here and decided to make the trip to see the dinosaurs (Jurassic Forest) again.
